Google Aplications in Teaching and Learning

Google Applications refer to a suite or an array of free tools which can be independently customized. These tools include:
  1. Google Drive (Formerly Google Docs)
  2. Google Hangout (formerly Google Talk)
  3. Google Alerts
  4. Google Sites
  5. Google Calendar
  6. Google Forms
  7. Google Chrome
  8. Google Moderator
  9. Google Maps
  10. Google Voice
  11. Google Vault
  12. Google Translate
  13. Google Plus
  14. Google Mail
  15. Google Analytics
All of the aforementioned applications can be effectively used (through proper planning, instruction and appropriation) to enhance teaching and learning both within and beyond the classroom. The subjects/fields in which they are most often used include Natural Sciences, Language Arts, Business, Physical Education, Mathematics, Special Education and more on all educationaly levels (Elementary, Secondary and Tertiary).

One has open access to all of these applications by simply creating a Google Account. This single Google Account is secure and provides you with the entire suite of applications at your finger-tips. Additionally, one must have internet access to make full use of these applications and, like cloud computing, one's documents, information and data is not limited to a computer's hard drive or flashdrive. Thus, such data and information is not only secure but can also be accessed at anytime and from anywhere in the world!!! As such, it makes Google applications make it easier for students to still be engaged and abreast of all classroom/course information and activities whilst in the comfort of their homes. Google Applications in education therefore takes teaching and learning beyond the four restrictive walls of the classroom while also equiping students with the necessary business, analytic, technology and communication skills needed to function effectively in the workplace.

In the few subsequent posts, we'll take a closer look at some of these Google applications individually in an educational context. But for now in the space below, feel free to share your opinions on Google Applications and more specifically, the use of these applications in teaching and learning.
